So what’s the difference and why should I care?

At a recent trade show I discovered a disturbing trend in Rustic Signs and Decor.
Companies that do all there manufacturing oversea are trying to fool customers into thinking they are
an American company by adding a sticker on their products DESIGNED IN THE USA.
I’m going to very simply explain why this is a deception and why you need to look closer for
the MADE IN THE USA label.

MADE IN THE USA:
Made in the USA is just what it says!
The item is designed here in the USA and all manufacturing is made here creating more jobs
and having a better handle on quality control. There is a closer relationship with vendors and customers
and most companies respect each other and try not to copy each others work. It is a community of artisans.
It’s very Simple, no need for a long explanation.

DESIGNED IN THE USA:
Designed in the USA is a deception. A company can employ one designer in the USA and then the items are made in bulk in a third world country cheaply and then shipped back to the USA. Just look on the back at the labeling, there will be a big sticker that says designed in the USA and then a small sticker that says Made in China. Sometimes the Designed in the USA label is actually on top of the Made in China sticker so that the customer does not know until the sale is complete. Companies that have their products made overseas are cutting corners. The items do not have the same quality control and are often made with inferior materials. I have also noticed that they DO NOT COST LESS than American Made. Because of tariffs and transport costs the items often cost more. Companies like this have often taken designs from others and had cheap knock offs made in China.

 

It’s simple, if you want to Buy American know what you are buying. Take that extra second and don’t just glance at a product. Look and see if it is actually made here in the USA. By law, a product from overseas must be labeled from the country of origin. Outer Banks Country Store designs and manufactures all our signs here in the USA. Signs can be customized by the customer in their choice of over 25 color combinations including different colored letters. No more cookie cutter signs that only come in one color. Sure we sell items on our website made overseas, it’s impossible to not. Some items are not available made in the USA. But, we don’t deceive by labeling Designed in the USA and we by American whenever possible. You should too!

Rustic Farmhouse Style Decorating

My Uncle Art's 100+ yr old Pennsylvania Farmhouse.

 Country porches remind me of summertime. Sitting on the stoop as a kid and sipping ice cold lemonade after playing in the meadow outside my great uncle's farmhouse in the mountains of Pennsylvania. I grew up in a suburb of Philadelphia, just 5 minutes outside of the city. But my family enjoyed the luxury of driving to my dad's uncle's farmhouse every summer, to get away from the stifling heat of the concrete, to the cool, crisp air of the mountains.

 This is where I first developed my love of the country, nature and all things rustic.

My uncle owned the land on both sides of a long country lane, with hundreds

of beautiful acres of fields, meadows and woods to explore. With expansive vistas

of foggy mountain tops in the distance.

It is only fitting that now I own a rustic farmhouse style home decor company,

along with my wonderful husband. My beloved great uncle Art lived a long, healthy

life, like farmers do. He lived well into his 90's, long enough to meet my husband,

but sadly not long enough to see us become successful entrepreneurs in a business

that showcases items that are reminiscent of his old farmhouse.

Pieces such as this Olde Farmhouse sign. We make each sign to order here at

Outer Banks Country Store. Made out of real wood and hand distressed to look old and weathered. This size is large enough to fit perfectly over the fireplace mantel. 

 

I try to relive that old nostalgia by decorating porches reminiscent of his vintage farmhouse that I loved visiting as a child. One way I do that is by always flying the American flag. But in true Americana fashion, I make sure the flags, buntings and banners I use are the primitive tea stained style.

 A painted and distressed 3D Metal Barn Star is a must for farmhouse style decorating.

If you're hanging them on vinyl siding, I suggest using a no drill, no hole, vinyl siding hook.

In short, Rustic Farmhouse Style is natural, upscale casual, using upcycled items and

showcasing your love of nature. It's comfortable and welcoming. It's distressed furniture, wood with paint coming off, mixing metals and wood. It's using light and airy colors that transition easily from indoors to outdoors. It's a big farmhouse sink and using and eclectic mix of store bought items and hand-me-downs. Setting a long wooden dining table and benches, with your grandmother's colored iced tea glasses.

Think distressed metal, rustic wood, natural elements, light colors, lots of natural light coming in and some sentimental pieces from the past mixed in.... and you've got Farmhouse Style!
