Hello!,
Just wanted to let you all know that the storm is just about over for us

and we are OPEN FOR BUSINESS!

Not nearly as bad as the national news is stating.
We were able to sleep through most of it. No power, cable or internet outages.
No real damage that I can see.

I just saw Al Roker standing on the beach in Kill Devil Hills

saying the wind is blowing at 70 mph.
Actually, it's only about 40 mph.

Each of our berry garlands are 4 ft. long, so you can measure how many you would need to go across the top of your cabinets. Then, you can wrap each strand with one of our Rusty Tin Garlands. They come in all kinds of great shapes like stars & hearts, even snowmen!

Each berry garland takes 1 star garland to wrap around it. This is very easy to do. Our tin garlands come compact, but stretch out to 5+ ft. each (60"). Both our berry garlands and the tin garland are bendable and flexible, so it's very easy to wrap the tin garland around each berry garland strand.

Next, we have both brown wire Christmas lights and Teeny Bulb Rice Lights that you can wrap around the garland. They're great because the brown wire matches the brown stem of the berry garland. The Rice Lights are tiny points of light and they're a little bit brighter than the regular Christmas light bulbs. Both styles are nice, so it depends on which you like better. You tend not to see the rice lights as much when they're off because they're so tiny.

We have 20 count strands and 35 count strands of lights, but only the 50 count and 100 counts have plugs on the ends that you can plug into each other, like on a Christmas tree. It depends on how long the length of your cabinets run and how many lights you want to wrap around each berry garland,

Plastic bags banned in Outer Banks

OUTER BANKS, N.C. - The days of hearing the clerk ask "paper or plastic" at grocery stores in the Outer Banks are over.

"From my point of view there is no difference," said one shopper.

But North Carolina leaders believe there is a difference. They're tired of seeing plastic bags litter the roads and pollute the water. They voted to ban plastic bags in large grocery stores in Currituck, Dare and Hyde Counties. Outer Banks wildlife officials say may times turtles mistake bags for jelly fish.

"The bag ban can only be good for wildlife, especially for marine wildlife," said Sharon Meade with the Outer Banks Wildlife Center.

Grocery stores like Harris Teeter must only offer recycled paper bags and at the same time try to convince customers to go with reusable bags. Some shoppers believe paper bags could be a pain.

"I do think it's inconvenient," said Katya Melvin. "At Food Lion, they have bags with no handles. It's really hard to take out of your car. You have to make several trips. You could grab plastic bags all at one time."

Wildlife officials say the bag ban is a good start, but say there are many other dangerous items that also harm the environment.

A Letter & Photos from Iraq

Here is a letter & some photos from one of our favorite people, Chaplain Rick Nevard, stationed over in Germany and out on deployment in Iraq. It all started when he found us on the internet and contacted us, because he had this idea to open up a coffee house as a respite for his soldiers, who are sacrificing and fighting for freedom over in Iraq. From his inspiration came the reality, shown in the pictures above. It's just a little touch of home and a little getaway, even if just for a moment, for these brave soldiers. Chaplain Nevard was kind enough to send us back pictures of some of the things we sent over to help with his project, and the letter he writes gives us a little more understanding as to what life is really like over there for these brave men & women. Next time you think you're having a bad day, think of them and it puts everything into perspective. They ask for nothing in return. So the best way to thank them for everything they and their families sacrifice for us, is to remember them, live your best life over here, and enjoy the freedoms that so few in the rest of the world get to enjoy, and that so many of our own give their lives for. We are forever grateful & in your debt. To Chaplain Nevard and your soldiers, thank you and stay safe. You're always in our thoughts & prayers.

A Letter from Chaplain Nevard:

"I will say, the funny signs have gotten a lot of laughs and a lot of
praise, from visiting Generals to the young Private, who desperately
needed something to smile at again. The "Put Your Big Girl Panties On"
sign is a huge favorite among the Soldiers and has become a regular
saying around here when Soldiers are ready to give up. My favorite, of
course, is the "Chaplain's Coffee House" sign (which will go back to
Germany with me!), with the "No one gets in to see the wizard" sign a
close second. The Betsy Ross flag hangs just opposite of my office desk
and is the first thing I see every time I raise my eyes; it hangs over
the couch, where I counsel Soldiers each day.

Here's a question we often get from our customers:
HOW DO I DECORATE THE SPACE ABOVE MY KITCHEN CABINETS?

Here's a popular idea that we recently shared with one of our favorite customers and we have everything you need to get the job done!
No decorating skills required! :)

Fill that space with your favorite color of Pip Berry Garland and wrap it with lights and rusty garland! This looks very pretty during the day and super cozy at night! Here's how:

Each of our berry garlands are 4 ft. long, so you can measure how many you would need to go across the top of your cabinets. Then, each berry garland takes 1 star garland to wrap around it. This is very easy to do. Our tin star garlands come compact, but stretch out to 6 ft. each. Both the berry garlands and the tin star garland are bendable and flexible, so it's very easy to wrap the tin garland around each berry garland strand. We also have tin heart garland and some seasonal ones, such as pumpkins, snowflakes and snowmen!

Next, we have both brown wire Christmas lights and Teeny Bulb Rice Lights that you can wrap around the garland. They're great because the brown wire matches the brown stem of the berry garland. The rice lights are tiny points of light and they're a little bit brighter than the Christmas light bulbs. Both styles are nice, so it depends on which you like better. You tend not to see the rice lights as much when they're off because they're so tiny.

We have 20 count strands and 35 count strands of lights, but only the 50 count and 100 counts have plugs on the ends that you can plug into each other, like on a Christmas tree. And there's also a 140 count strand of rice lights called a "dancing strand" that has several multi function settings where the lights flicker, "dance" and fade. Very cozy & twinkly at night! This one also has a stackable, end-to-end plug. It depends on how long the length of your cabinets run and how tightly you want to wrap the lights around each berry garland, to know how many strands of lights you'll need.

An additional idea: Collect different colors of berry garland for the different seasons throughout the year. Change them out with the seasons! You can easily store our berry garland in those plastic containers that you can find in Walmart, Target & Home Depot. This way you can use them again and again every year, every season!

Carpet Cleaning Tips

A professional Carpet Cleaner once told me a little insider secret. Shampoo & detergents make your carpets dirtier than plain water! Here's the deal, when you clean your carpets with shampoos, they always leave soap deposits behind. These deposits hold onto dirt & will make your carpets get dirty faster, giving the carpet cleaning professional a reason to come back a few months later!

Here's what you should do:
Vacuum your carpets first. If you can, purchase a hot water carpet extractor. They are about $150.00. You can also rent one from your local market or home center for about $30.00.
I personally don't like to rent them because your just bringing strangers dirt into your house & who knows what they picked up with it (YUCK!)

I like to add about a 1/4 cup of baking soda to the hot water, this helps to neutralize odors especially if you have pets. Follow the directions that come with the cleaner & just remember,
Don't use soap! You'll be surprised how much dirt comes up with just water. If you do this about 2-3 times a year your carpets will last twice as long!

Quick Summer grilled chicken recipe

Hi Everyone! It's Summer & let's face food just tastes better on the grill!
Here is a great quick idea for grilled chicken that does not break the bank & will give you some great leftovers for some quick meals.
At the grocery market pick up a bag or two of frozen boneless chicken breast. These bags are about 40-48 ounces of flash frozen breast meat. They range in price between $8 - $12 & contain about 6-8 breasts. Defrost the chicken in cold water in a large pot. I'm one for food safety so change the water every 30-40 minutes until they are completely defrosted. While your grill is heating up, trim any excess fat from the breasts & then season each side with Onion powder, paprika, garlic powder, black pepper, oregano & basil. Add or subtract any of these spices to taste.

Grill both side of the chicken until cooked. You can cut one of the breasts open to make sure that it is completely cooked. The chicken will be tender & juicy & is great served with some baked beans & corn on the cob. Any leftover breast can be used to make your favorite chicken salad, or cut them into strips & add to a garden salad. Enjoy!

Home Decor Trends - Country & shabby cottage Signs!

Decorating with signs is easy and fun! It's a great way to showcase your personality in your home decor! It doesn't matter what style you have your home decorated in or what colors your rooms are. A correctly placed sign will add fun, whimsy and in some cases, even romance, to your home's atmosphere!

Every room needs a sign and I can promise you that there is a sign out there to fit every personality! Colors and styles are not a problem. You can find signs in rustic country primitive, distressed wood styles, which come in dark, tea stained colors. Or, if you prefer light and airy pastels, more suited to a French country cottage or the shabby chic style of decorating, you can find that too. And kids absolutely love bright colors in their rooms. Trendy colors for little girls rooms are hot pink, lime green, turquoise and purple. Bright orange has become popular too and you might not think of it, but bright orange looks great when paired with turquoise! Blue and orange are what's called "complimentary colors", and though they seem opposite, they work great together! Bright orange also looks great with hot pink! It's definitely eye-popping, but fun! Colors for little boys' rooms are a little more traditional, usually with reds, blues and greens being the most popular. But again, it depends on the personalities involved. When choosing home decor signs, think about the interests of the person, then choose your colors and sayings from there.

Now that we've discussed colors, let's get to the sayings. There are literally thousands of sayings to choose from. And if you just can't find something you love that reflects who you are, then you can always have a sign custom made with your own personal saying.

Let's start with the Living Room. One great idea is to hang a sign that says, "Home is where our story begins", "And They Lived Happily Ever After" or "All of This Because Two People Fell In Love" and surround it with pictures of your family. Cluster the pictures in groups around the sign. Hanging frames of different sizes, colors and textures in an irregular pattern gives you a cozy, folk-y, country clutter look that you might find in an old farmhouse. Hanging family pictures in sleek, slim lined frames, all of the same size, and in straight lines & angles, to form a square or rectangle, gives you a modern, edgy flair.

For a patriotic theme, try a sign that says, "God, Family, Country" and cluster some barn stars and a flag banner around it. Keep all the colors of your decorations in red, white & blue, or if decorating truly country primitive, keep them Burgundy, Cream & Navy Blue!

Some other popular sign sayings for a country living room are, "The Olde Farmhouse", "The Keeping Room", "The Gathering Room", "Country Blessings", "Home, Heart, Hearth", "Love, Laughter & Friends Always Welcome Here" or "Live, Laugh, Love", just to name a few.

But the kitchen is the center of a home. And there's so much unused space to decorate! The wall space above the kitchen cabinets, for example, is a great place to hang a sign. Also, above a door or even on the backsplash area. "Farm Fresh Eggs" and "Country Kitchen" are all-time favorites. But don't forget signs like "Bistro" or "Cafe" for a European flair! And funny signs about wine or drinking are all the rage right now. "Life's too short to drink cheap wine!" is always a hit. So are "It's 5:00 Somewhere!" and "One Martini, Two Martini, Three Martini, FLOOR!" And don't forget the dining room. Some perfect sayings for enjoying a good meal are, "Celebrate Friends, Family, Traditions" and "Eat, Drink & Be Merry".

The idea is to make family and friends feel welcome and relaxed in your home and let them know you treasure the time you spend with them. And since most get togethers are done over food, and spent hanging out in the living room, dining room and kitchen, these are the perfect places to decorate and have fun.

But speaking of treasured time with loved ones, don't forget to let your family know how you feel about them too. A popular idea is to hang the sign, "Always Kiss Me Goodnight" over a bed. There are cute ones for hanging over children's beds. And there are pretty pastels in pinks, sage greens and light blues for a baby's nursery. This sign makes a great baby shower gift too! But there are also larger signs with this saying on it, in a more scripty letter style, that you can hang over the bed in the master suite, that will add a romantic style to the room. Again, pair this with your wedding portrait on the wall above your bed and you will have the most romantic bedroom in town! And speaking of romance, "Always Kiss Me Goodbye" is the perfect sign for hanging over the front door.

If you're a parent, funny signs placed strategically around the home, can be a definite mood enhancer for a stressed out mom! "Because I'm The Mommy, That's Why!" is a great one. Plus "Time-Out Area", "Cursing is Prohibited" and "If Mama Ain't Happy, Ain't Nobody Happy!" are always a hit. And don't forget the classic, "You have two choices for dinner - take it or leave it!"

Finally, don't forget the bathroom and the laundry room. "Outhouse" is a funny and popular sign for the country primitive bathroom. Old fashioned signs such as "Washroom", "Hot Bath 25¢" and "Country Bath" are a must have for a country cottage decor style bathroom. "Laundry" or "Laundry Room - Drop Your Drawers Here" are good choices for the laundry room. They turn a mundane chore into a colorful, funny and home-y area.

It's amazing how all of these signs magically turn a house into a home. Home decor items like these have a comforting quality. They make us feel like we did when we were little and visiting grandma's house. And there's not a better feeling in the world than being warm, cozy and comfortable in your own home. And you know you've done your job when your guests feel that way too, even though they're only visiting. And when your guests are relaxed, you can relax! Life is about enjoying the simple things, the happy quiet times with family and friends. And believe it or not, adding some decorative signs to your home can remind you on a daily basis to do just that.

How To Decorate Your Wedding On A Budget

These days, everybody's doing everything on a budget, including weddings. But that doesn't mean your wedding has to be anything less than the perfect day you've always dreamed of. While it's been said that "less is more", we here at Outer Banks Country Store would like you to know that when it comes to your dream wedding, you get "more for less"! Here are our tips for decorating in style while spending less.

By doing the decorations yourself, you'll save a lot of money. Wedding & event planners spend a lot more when they're doing the shopping for you. Let's face it, they don't have to be frugal because they're spending your money! And rentals can be just as pricey. We offer elegant decorations at affordable prices and once your wedding is over, you can use these same items to decorate your house! Let's start with color. You can either choose your favorite color scheme or decorate seasonally, depending on the time of year you're getting married. Take our Pip Berry garlands, for example. We offer a large variety of colors to choose from, including Spring, Summer, Fall & Winter color combinations. Use our Burgundy, Burgundy & Cream, Red, Red & White Mix, or Red White & Green for Christmas weddings. Back to our Pip Berries, we suggest using our berry candle rings in corresponding colors. Use our 4" berry rings around pillar or jar candles on the tables. If you're not using jar candles, you'll need a drip tray to catch the melting wax. We offer wooden candle trays in different sizes that can be custom painted to match your berry ring colors! Color coordination is definitely the key when decorating for your wedding. We also offer these berry rings in a 2" size. Two inches is the inside diameter of these rings, so they will fit perfectly around a standard votive candle cup. Using votive candles, a lot of them, all over the reception room adds a very romantic, twinkly flair to the occasion. You may want to stay with unscented candles, so as not to overwhelm your guests. Also keep in mind, that lit candles may not be a good idea if there are going to be small children at your wedding. But, these same 2" berry rings are also the perfect size to use as napkin rings! These napkin rings can also become party favors. You can always play a game to see which guest at each table will get to take home the whole set of napkin rings for that table! (For example, passing a napkin around the table while the music plays, and when the music stops, whoever has the napkin gets the prize! Or you could play musical chairs at each table!) But back to the candles, if you're looking for that warm, romantic glow at your reception, without the danger of real, lit candles, try our Battery Operated Wax Pillar Candles. They come in three sizes, 3" x 3", 6" x 3" and 9" x 3". They're made of real wax, but they're battery operated with an LED flame. They have a large, flame shaped tip that even flickers like a real candle! The tip gives off a warm, amber glow. And they're available in lots of different colors. These are a great choice and a heavy, high quality product that you'll be very happy with. And you'll be able to use them again and again! Just replace the battery, which you can get at any department or hardware store.

We also suggest using our Pip berry floral picks to make your centerpiece arrangements. Using coordinating colors, mix & match colors and sizes of our 18" tall and 23" tall berry sprigs. This will add color and depth to your centerpiece. An exciting new trend in weddings is to offer cupcakes or mini, individual cakes in lieu of, or even in addition to, the wedding cake. We offer what is called a Cupcake Tree for displaying these beautiful little cakes. Again, presentation is everything!
